I hadn’t planned on lingering at the treehouse now that the crew is gone, but unfortunately, Sydney doesn’t seem to be in a rush to go anywhere. I’m ready to return to the peace and quiet of my evening, but she hovers over my work table, shuffling through my blueprints and picking up tools before setting them down again.

“Could you not touch that?” I say, trying not to let the sudden burst of annoyance I’m feeling show too much. I snatch a drill from her hands and place it out of her reach.

She smirks at me, rounds the table, and picks up the drill again, buzzing it twice. “Put me to work,” she says. “I’ve got a few minutes before I need to head home.”

“I don’t think so.”

“Why not?”

“It’s not in your job description.”

“If you show me what to do, I’m sure I could be helpful.”

“No.”

“Is it because I talk too much?”

At least she’s aware of the fact. “That’s part of the reason.”

“You can limit my questions, then,” she says reasonably, though I doubt she’s capable of holding back any thought that comes to her mind the moment it surfaces. “How many questions do I get to ask you today?”

I feel the edge of my lips tug up my cheek as I watch her. Maybe if I play along, she’ll leave me be.

“Three questions,” I say. “But make them quick. And don’t touch anything.”

I pull the drill from her grasp and set it down again.

She leans over my work table, her extended arms entirely obscuring my view of the blueprints I’d been studying. I look up impatiently.

“Question one,” she says, looking delighted at the prospect of subjecting me to an inquiry. “Are you a morning person or a night owl?”

“What kind of question is that?”

“It says a lot about a person.”

“Okay.” I resist the urge to roll my eyes. “Morning person.”

“Hmm,” she says, intrigued, as if I’ve just divulged something far more interesting.

“What about you?” I hear myself say. My eyes dart up to meet hers in an uncomfortable moment of silence, the question hanging in the air between us. A look of shock crosses Sydney’s pretty face as she stands upright.

“Trent,” she says slowly. “Are you feeling alright? Did you just ask me a question?”

“Just answer it,” I mumble, feeling self-conscious.

“Alright,” she says roughly, imitating my inflection. Then she smiles. “I am also…” she leans over the table towards me, her curls spilling over her shoulders, “a morning person. Look at that. You and I have something in common other than the fact that we now share a particular dislike for any and all persons named Joe.”

I pretend that her statement has no impact on me whatsoever, but it does. I suddenly wonder how Sydney likes to spend her mornings. Does she wake up slowly? Take her time easing out of bed? Or does she rise from sleep like someone’s chasing her with a hot poker?

I’d guess the latter.

“Question two,” she says, interrupting my musings. “If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?”

What a strange question.
